Oath ordinance removes controversial phrase that PM Oli refused to read out aloud

KATHMANDU: The government has removed the words ‘pratigya garchu’ meaning ‘I pledge’ through an oath ordinance.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, while taking the oath of office and secrecy before the President on May 13, had refused to utter the words ‘I pledge’. The PM had drawn flak for his refusal to read out aloud those words.

Likewise, the ordinance has provisioned for the oath-taker to pre-inform his choice of words. Oath-taker will have to choose between ‘god’, ‘country’ and ‘people’ and inform his choice to the President.

Moreover, the oath-taker will have to be present in formal attire as prescribed by the government while taking the oath of office. However, one can swear in by wearing dignified attire or dress that reflects one’s culture and tradition or identity.

The President issued oath related ordinance Thursday.
