Oli likely to become PM again pursuant to Article 76 (5)

KATHMANDU: There have been indications that Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has strategically recommended the President to call the political parties to come forward with their claims for new government formation pursuant to Article 76 (5) by 5 pm today.

With the support from the Thakur-Mahato faction of the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP), there is a possibility that the CPN-UML party and Prime Minister Oli can win the vote of confidence in the parliament.

Sources have said that the agreement to form a task force to amend the Constitution and decision to resolve issues related to citizenship through ordinance indicates that Oli wants to become the Prime Minister in line with Article 76 (5).

The Thakur-Mahato faction is of the view that it would be wiser to form a coalition government with CPN-UML rather than supporting the incumbent government formed in line with 76 (3).

Hence, Prime Minister has agreed to form a task force on the Constitution amendment.

Oli was appointed Prime Minister as per Article 76 (3) of the constitution and Artice 76 (4) requires PM to win a vote of confidence. If the PM appointed as Article 76 (3) cannot gain a vote of confidence within thirty days then the President must call on any other HoR member to stake a claim for the government.
