NC leaders protest President’s invitation to form govt as per Article 76 (5)

Office-bearers' meeting called for Friday morning

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Sekhar Koirala has criticized the move of Prime Minister and President.

Taking to social media Thursday evening after the President called on political parties to form a government as per Article 76 (5), Koirala said PM KP Oli recommending initiating Article 76 (5) without resigning or without going to parliament and President Bidhya Bhandari following suit meant undermining the constitution and an attempt to destroy the constitution and push the nation towards conflict.

Another NC leader Ram Chandra Poudel also complained of the window given to form a new government to Members of Parliament (MPs), saying it was too short and the President was about to discard the constitution with the move.

Taking to social media, leader Poudel alleged that such a short window indicated assault attempts to the constitution. “Giving less than 24 hours to form a government as per Article 76 (5) is like throwing the constitution after dissolving the parliament,” Poudel wrote. As per Poudel, a minimum of three days time should be given to form a new government as per convention.

Meanwhile, the Nepali Congress has called office-bearers’ meeting on Friday morning at party President Sher Bahadur Deuba’s residence in Budhanilkantha to discuss power-sharing.

The meeting is called as President has given until 5 pm Friday for political parties to stake claim for government.
