Prachanda demands action against PM Oli for breaching election code of conduct

KATHMANDU: CPN-Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has demanded action against Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli for breaching the election code of conduct Wednesday.

Issuing a statement Wednesday evening, Prachanda asked the Election Commission to take action against PM Oli as he appealed to voters to vote for National Assembly (NA) by-election candidate Ram Bahadur Thapa ‘Badal’ during the silence period.

The by-election for the NA seat from Bagmati Province is Thursday.

“It is against the basic principle of elections for the head of government to appeal in favor of a candidate instead of holding free, fair and dignified elections,” the statement read, adding, “Condemning this act of the Prime Minister, I urge the Election Commission to take necessary action.”

Issuing a public appeal during the silence period is a grave violation of the election code of conduct, the statement noted.

Prime Minister Oli issued a statement Wednesday afternoon saying that the voters of the CPN-UML would not be forgiven for not voting for his party’s candidate i.e. Badal.
