Forget majority government, Deuba tells NC leaders

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba briefed his party leaders to “forget” about the possibility of forming a majority government.

NC President Deuba said this at a meeting of the party office-bearers and former office-bearers at his residence in Budhanilkantha on Thursday.

“Now that since Madhav Kumar Nepal has agreed to hold talks with Prime Minister KP Oli, we cannot do anything now,” a source quoted Deuba as saying.

With at least 20 more UML leaders resigning, the Nepali Congress was expecting a majority to form a new government under its leadership.

Last Monday, Prime Minister KP Oli, who is also the CPN-UML chairperson, lost the vote of confidence in the House of Representatives.

After that, President Bidya Devi Bhandari had given time to the parties to form a majority government as per Article 76 (2) of the constitution.

That time ends at 9 pm on Thursday.
