Coalition govt almost unlikely with JSP leaders divided

KATHMANU: The formation of a coalition government by opposition parties is almost unlikely with the lawmakers of Janata Samajwadi Party sharply divided.

Despite efforts being made by main opposition Nepali Congress and CPN (Maoist Center), the new power-sharing is not possible without the support of the JSP.

The Thakur-Mahato faction is loyal to Prime Minister KP Oli saying that the Oli-government would address their demands. The faction remained neutral during the confidence motion tabled by Prime Minister KP Oli on Monday.

The chance of the coalition government has become further slimmer after the Federal Council Chairman of JSP Dr Baburam Bhattarai stressed the need to form a national consensus government in a tweet today.

Bhattarai’s tweet has hinted that the parties should go for an early election to resolve the present deadlock.

Earlier, the Yadav-Bhattarai faction of the JSP was in favor of a coalition government.

President Bidya Bhandari has given a three-day deadline to form a coalition government. The deadline is expiring on Thursday.

The agreement among the opposition parties on the formation of a coalition government by today afternoon is almost unlikely.

As things stand, the Nepal-Khanal has been decisive on whether to go for early elections or continue with the current parliament.

In a meeting held yesterday, the Nepal-Khanal faction decided to continue with the present parliament by forming a coalition government.
