KATHMANDU: The Standing Committee (SC) meeting of the CPN (Maoist Center) has decided to pull out of the government Tuesday.

A source told the media that a letter stating the withdrawal of support of government would be registered Wednesday.

Earlier, the party had entrusted party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ with the authority to withdraw support to the government. However, the party had not taken any step towards that end due to volatile political coalitions among parliamentary parties.

The SC meeting also concluded that Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s political motive behind the May 10 parliament session is ill-intentioned and not deserving trust.

The meeting also protested the government’s Monday decision to sack two Governors representing the Maoist Center in Sudurpaschim and Gandaki province. It expressed solidarity with opposition forces regarding boycotting events attended by Lumbini Chief Minister Shankar Pokharel.

The decision to withdraw comes as PM Oli is slated to seek a vote of confidence at the parliament on May 10. PM Oli requires 138 votes for the majority in the parliament.

Ruling CPN-UML, which has 121 seats in the 275-member House of Representatives, requires additional 17 seats to garner a majority in the parliament.

The main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) with 63 seats (two suspended), and Maoist Center with 49 seats, are not likely to stand with Prime Minister Oli. In this political scenario, Oli is solely dependent on Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) which has 34 seats (two suspended).

However, the JSP is also divided.
