Constitutional Bench hearing writ against Speaker Sapkota today

KATHMANDU: A Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court (SC) is hearing a murder case filed against House of Representatives (HoR) Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota today.

The Constitutional Bench comprising Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana, Justices Deep Kumar Karki, Meera Khadka, Hari Krishna Karkai and Ishwar Khatiwada will hear the writ petition filed against Sapkota.

The case had been filed by Purnimaya Lama on March 3, 2008, for his involvement in abduction and killing of her husband Arjun Lama during the Maoist insurgency in 2005.

The case had been pending at the Constitutional Bench ever since it was filed. Till date, it has been rescheduled for hearing at least 19 times, however, a hearing has yet to take place.

There was an uproar among victims of Maoist insurgency and rights activists when Sapkota accused of murder was nominated to the post of Speaker of the HoR in January 2020.

There were similar reservations when Sapkota was picked as Minister in 2011 and 2015.
