KATHMANDU: The world is observing 26th World Press Freedom Day today. Nepal is also marking the day with the slogan, “Media for Democracy and Peace: Journalism and Election in the Age of Internet’.
World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993, following the recommendation of UNESCO’s General Conference.
Based on the records of the previous year, Sweden, Finland and Norway are ranked the best countries in terms of press freedom while Syria is placed the worst country. Nepal lies in the 54th position, according to the Freedom House, an American institute.
Meanwhile, National Human Rights Commission Chairman Anup Raj Sharma has said that danger still looms large over the press even though Nepal did splendid jobs of writing constitution and holding elections. He asserted that the NHRC will leave no stone unturned to safeguard press freedom and human rights.
