Police statistics reveal 18 persons commit suicide daily

KATHMANDU: It has been found that 18 people commit suicide daily in Nepal.

According to Nepal Police Headquarters, there have been 4,483 suicides in the first eight months of the current fiscal 2020/21. As many as 3,534 incidents of suicide were recorded in the corresponding period of FY 2019/20. In total in 2019/20, as many as 6,241 cases of suicide took place. The number of suicide cases has increased by 26.85 percent in the current fiscal year compared to last year.

Similarly, 21,787 people have committed suicide in the last 44 months till mid-February of the current fiscal year.

According to police statistics, 5,317 people committed suicide in the fiscal year 2017/18. This number increased in FY 2018/19. As many as 5,746 people committed suicide in 2018/19.

In the first eight months of the current fiscal year, 4,483 people have committed suicide. Police statistics show that men commit suicide more than women.

The highest number of suicides occur by hanging, jumping into the river and consuming poison.

According to police officials, Nepal is among the top 12 countries in the world with the highest number of suicide cases.
