Julian Assange sentenced to 50 weeks in British jail

LONDON: A British judge sentenced WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to 50 weeks in prison for skipping bail seven years ago, media reports said.

Asange has been alleged of holing up in the London-based Ecuadorian Embassy.

Judge Deborah Taylor said Assange’s seven years in the Embassy of Ecuador in London had cost British taxpayers US$21 million.

While Judge Taylor read the sentence, Assange stood impassively with his hands clasped. Assange’s supporters chanted “shame on you” at the judge as Assange was led away at Southwark Crown Court. (Agencies)
