Govt, Biplav group begin holding talks in capital

KATHMANDU:  The government has started holding talks with the Netra Bikram Chand-led outfit in the capital amid tight security on Wednesday.

Biplav’s team is comprised of the group’s Spokesperson Khadga Bahadur Bishwokarma ‘Prakanda’ and Central Committee member Uday Chalaune “Deepak”.

According to sources, the talks team representing the Biplav outfit arrived in the capital Tuesday.

Similarly, the government’s talks team is led by Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa in which Prime Minister KP Oli’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Dr Rajan Bhattarai is a member of the committee.

According to sources, the Biplav group would ask the government to release its cadres and leaders as a precondition during the talks. Likewise, the other condition would be to lift the ban imposed on the party, it said.

The government had banned the Biplav group in 2019 citing what it said “terrorist” activities.

A recent cabinet meeting had decided to initiate talks with the group to bring them to the peace process.
