BIRGUNJ: Two Armed Police Force personnel were injured in a clash between the police and Indian sand smugglers in Birgunj Friday.

According to DIG Raju Aryal, the spokesperson of APF, Aush Raya Yadav, 24, and Mahesh Yadav, 25, were injured while trying to stop the Indians smuggling sand in an Indian tractor from the Oriya river. Both injured are undergoing treatment in Birgunj-based Narayani Hospital and are said to be out of danger.

According to Dr. Uday Narayan Singh, the Chief of Emergency Department of Narayani Hospital, 18 stitches have been put near Ayush’s left ear. Dr. Singh informed that Naresh has sustained an injury on his left hand and leg.

Indian smugglers have been excavating sand from the Oriya river in Pidariguthi of Jagarnathpur-1, Parsa every year.

The clash started when the APF deployed from Armed Police Force Border Outpost Mahadevpattti and Pidariguthi Post tried to take control of three tractors smuggling sand.

The situation became tense after the Indians started hitting the Nepali side, including APF with sticks, shovels and stones. The Indians have also succeeded in taking the tractors held in control by APF.

The security forces have not been able to stop the excavation of the riverine substance of the Oriya river for years.
