Govt to hold polls in 40 districts on April 30 and in 37 on May 10

KATHMANDU: The government has finalized the districts and provinces for holding elections in two phases on April 30 and May 10.

A cabinet meeting held on Monday decided to hold elections in 40 districts of Pradesh 2, Gandaki, Lumbini and Karnali Pradesh on April 30.

Similarly, the elections will be held in 37 districts of Pradesh 1, Bagmati and Sudurpaschim on May 10, according to the decision.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had announced to hold mid-term polls on April 30 and May 10 following the dissolution of the House of Representatives (HoR) on December 20.

However, the Supreme Court has not yet given its final verdict on the writ petitions filed against the dissolution of the HoR.

The Prachanda-Nepal faction of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) and other opposition parties including Nepali Congress have been saying that it is not possible to conduct elections in April.

Amidst speculations surrounding the upcoming elections, Prime Minister Oli is scheduled to go to the Office of the Election Commission (EC) to discuss the election preparations at 11 am today.
