SC issues show-cause notice on writ against yearly renewal of online media

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) today issued a show-cause notice while hearing a writ petition filed against the provision of renewing online media every year.

The apex court has also ordered to call defendants for discussion on whether to issue an interim order or not.

The order was made by a bench of Justice Shushmalatha Mathema while hearing a petition on Friday.

Journalists and advocates Lilanath Ghimire and Bishnu Giri ‘Nischal’ had filed a writ petition at the court on Monday against the provision of the Online Media Operation (First Amendment) Directive 2074 to renew online media every year.

In the writ, the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, and the Department of Information and Broadcasting have been made defendants.

The Online Media Operation (First Amendment) Directive 2074 provides for the renewal of online media after registration.
