KATHMANDU: Tulasi Thapa, accustomed to swindling people and money in the name of sending people to the United States of America, was arrested by police from Durbar Marg, Kathmandu on Wednesday.
Thapa, who claimed to have a “connection” with high-profile people and the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission even used to take part in television discussion programs as an analyst and a defender of human rights.
However, police arrested Thapa, 60, on the charge of swindling Rs 1.5 million in the name of providing a multiple visa to go to the United States.
Sources said Thapa used to ask for a huge amount of money assuring them that he would provide visas to enter America.
“We arrested him after receiving complaints of his fraud,” said police Spokesperson DSP Pramesh Bista adding, “He has been learned to have identified himself as the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission, having links with top personalities, among others.”
A team of the Metropolitan Crime Branch arrested Thapa, a temporary resident of Chabahil, Mitra Park from Durbar Marg.
According to DSP Bista, this is one representative incident. Several people like Thapa are involved in fraudulence on the pretext of being a high-profile personality and having political and diplomatic connections.
Meanwhile, Anna Richey-Allen, Spokesperson at the U.S. Embassy in Nepal said, “We are aware of this incident and are in close contact with the relevant components of the Nepal Police.”
“The State Department’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security has special agents assigned to embassies to work with host nation law enforcement to investigate and prosecute cases just like this one,” she told Khabarhub.
She added, “To avoid falling victim to visa scams, the U.S. Embassy encourages applicants seeking visas to only trust information from official sources, such as the U.S. Embassy website, and to never pay money to someone who claims to have the power to obtain a U.S. visa on their behalf.”
A permanent resident of Panchkhapan Village Municipality-5 of Sankhuwasabha, Thapa claimed to be the chairman of the National Human Rights Commission and swindled money by saying that he would be sent people to the United States.
He has been sent to Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Circle for necessary action on fraud-related charges.
According to the police, Thapa had swindled Rs 1.5 million from a person by promising to take him to the United States with a five-year multiple entry visa when he went to a program in the United States.
