‘Save Girls, Educate Girls’ campaign limited to slogan only

KATHMANDU: The campaign of “Save Girls, Educate Girls,” launched by the government of Province 2 has been limited to only slogan.

The number of incidents related to deaths of girls and women over dowry and other reasons such as witchcraft is ever increasing.

Less than two weeks after the gruesome incident in which a newly wed Nirmala Yadav was set on fire alive by her own husband in Dhanusha, Kanchan Devi Mandal suffered the same kind of fate in Siraha Municipality-8. Her husband and mother-in-law set a fire to Kanchan after being doused in kerosene following a minor dispute. Almost 80% of Kanchan’s body was charred.

The condition of Kanchan, 21, is critical now. The incident took place following a minor dispute on Thursday.

Police have taken Kanchan’s mother-in-law under control while her husband Bechan Mandal is at large, said SP Jivan Shrestha.

She has been referred to Kathmandu after her treatment was impossible at BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan.

On April 18, Nirmala Yadav, 20, was set on fire by her husband Mukesh Yadav after dousing in kerosene in Dhanusha district.
