National Earthquake Safety Day being observed today



BHAKTAPUR: The 23rd National Earthquake Safety Day is being observed on the premises of historical and religious Kumari temple at Bode of Madhyapurthimi municipality in the district on Friday.

The Day is being observed under the slogan ‘Earthquake safety, protection of lives of people in public cooperation’, said Padam Kumar Mainali, Coordinator of Earthquake Safety Day Publicity Sub-Committee and officiating Director General of Department of Urban Development and Building Construction.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has been invited as the chief guest of the program, and he is scheduled to inaugurate ‘Earthquake Safety Digital Expo’.

Coordinator of Main Organizing Committee and Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa would chair the program, said Coordinator of Earthquake Safety Day Management Committee Sub-Committee and Mayor Madan Sundar Shrestha.

Mayor Shrestha said, “The municipality has completed all preparations of the program. Security arrangement will be made strong.”

The Day is observed by organizing various awareness programs across the country in commemoration of the devastating earthquake that struck in Nepal at 2:24 pm on Magh 2, 1990 BS. The government had started observing it as the National Earthquake Safety Day since January 16, 1999.

A mega earthquake struck Nepal with its epicenter at Barpak on April 25, 2015, killing almost 9,000 people and destroying over 800,000 houses in the country.
