Tamu Lhosar being observed today

KATHMANDU: The Gurung community in the country is marking ‘Tamu Lhosar’ or New Year festival today with much fanfare.

As the meaning of ‘Lho’ refers to the year and ‘Sar’ means to change, this day is called ‘Tamu Lhosar’ in the community. ‘Tamu Lhosar’ is also related to the sunray as well. It is said that this festival is marked on Paush 15 as the sunray first arrives in the districts of Lamjung, Gorkha, Tanahun, Syangja, Manang, Kaski, and Parbat– the areas with Gurung majority population on the basis of their residence.

After the Gurung observe this festival, the Tamang and Sherpa mark this festival in the coming months respectively.

Since the daytime becomes longer than the nighttime after Paush 15, this festival has great importance.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival would not be marked in Tundikhel in Kathmandu as in the previous years, according to Gurung Samaj.
