Need of high-level understanding to safeguard the Constitution: Speaker Sapkota

KATHMANDU: Speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR) Agni Prasad Sapkota has emphasized the need for a high-level understanding between the political parties to safeguard the Constitution.

“It is high time that all honorable lawmakers, political parties, civil society, legal practitioners, intellectuals, the media and all concerned to be sensitive and serious for the sake of constitutional supremacy,” Speaker Sapkota said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

He has expressed shock over the dissolution of the HoR saying, “I and the entire House have been shocked with the way the Parliament was dissolved.”

The Article 76 of the Constitution makes it clear that the HoR will not be dissolved as long as there is an option to form a government, he has said.

“In such a context, such provision has been made in the Constitution with the belief that the Constitution will not be interpreted in a different way, and to ensure the separation of power.”

Sapkota said it is worth mentioning that the full term of the House of Representatives has been envisaged to address the people’s desire for stability and prosperity by correcting the inconsistent practices of the past.
