Govt starts consultations with experts on side effects of COVID-19 vaccines

KATHMANDU: The government is busy in consultations with the experts on who should be held responsible after side effects of COVID-19 vaccines have been seen in some people.

Experts have suggested the Ministry of Health and Population bring vaccines only after deciding who should be held responsible for side effects of the vaccine and after clarifying the issues that can be caused by side effects.

Side effects of vaccines have been seen in some people in foreign countries using the vaccine. However, it has not yet been decided which vaccine is to be brought to Nepal

A Secretariat has been formed under the coordination of Director-General of the Department of Health Services Dr. Dipendra Man Singh to prepare for the COVID-19 vaccine.

A member of the Secretariat said, “This issue has also been raised seriously in the Secretariat meeting. As it is a new vaccine, we need to be clear on this issue as it has been said that the vaccine-producing countries and companies have said that they will provide vaccines only if the procuring country takes the responsibility for side effects.”

Dr. Shyam Raj Uprety, the coordinator of the COVID-19 Vaccine Technical Advisory Committee formed by the Ministry of Health, also said that the COVID-19 vaccine is new and should be monitored effectively for its safety.

“It’s important that we keep a close eye on vaccine safety,” he said, “For that, we already have an autonomous committee to investigate post-vaccination risks.”
