18-year-old set on fire for reporting sexual abuse in Bangladesh



DHAKA: Nusrat Jahan Rafi, an 18-year-old student, was set on fire for filing a report with the police about her sexual harassment allegedly by the principal, in Feni of Bangladesh, local media reported.

Rafi, studying in a madrasa, filed a report to the police on March 27 against her principal Maulana Siraj Ud Doula alleging of calling her into his office and repeatedly touched her inappropriately, media reports said.

Rafi said that she was asked to stay quiet by her teachers whenever she raised the issue.

Police had filmed her statement without her consent, in which Rafi could be seen crying, and trying to hide her face with her hands. The video was later leaked to media.

In the video, the police officer was heard saying, it’s not a big deal, and asking her to move her hands from her face.

The principal was arrested. However, Rafi and her family allegedly received death threats from the principal’s supporters.

Meanwhile, Rafi was set on fire by at least four unidentified people on the roof of a school building on April 6, Rafi.

Police said that the miscreants dressed in burqas to hide their faces had tried to pressure Rafi to withdraw her complaint against the Principal and set her on fire when she refused.

She was rushed to a hospital after doctors found that she had suffered 80 percent on her body. Rafi died on April 10. (Agencies)
