All services except emergency and COVID-19 to be halted on Sunday

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Medical Association (NMA) has announced to halt all services except emergency and COVID-19 at the health institutions across the country on Sunday.

The protest has been announced in support of Dr. Govinda KC, who is on a hunger strike for the past 27 days demanding reform in Nepal’s medical education sector.

The NMA, the umbrella organizations of doctors in Nepal, has expressed serious objection to the ongoing talks arguing that they have been limited to mere formalities.

Issuing a press release, Dr. Badri Rijal, General Secretary of the association, has urged the government to take the talks with Dr. KC’s representation to a logical conclusion.

The NMA has warned that if an agreement is not reached by Sunday; it will be forced to launch a stern agitation.

Earlier today, the government had urged Dr. KC to postpone his hunger strike.

After the talks failed late Friday night, the government negotiating team had issued a statement on Saturday requesting Dr. KC to call off the strike.

The talks held on Thursday and Friday night between the government and KC’s representatives had ended inconclusively.

Dr. KC, who is on the 27th day of his 19th fast-unto-death at the TUTH, started his hunger strike calling for the implementation of his past agreements reached with the government.

Campaigner for reforms in Nepal’sNepal’s medical sector, Dr. KC has said he would not break his hunger strike this time until a reliable base is formed for the implementation of his past agreements.
