Nepal Republic Party condemns closure of border points by China

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Republic Party has strongly condemned the closure of border points with Nepal by China.

In a statement, the party’s Chairman Siddhartha Gautam accused the northern neighbor of ‘showing its true face’ to Nepal and the Nepali people by closing Kerung and Tatopani border points with Dashain at the doorstep.

“China has closed major Nepal-Tibet border checkpoints for the past two weeks, causing 150 containers of goods ordered by Nepal, 1.1 million syringes used to vaccinate children and tens of millions of rupees worth of medical supplies stranded at the border points,” Gautam said in the statement.

China has committed crimes against Nepal and Nepalis by closing the checkpoints, the party further accused.

Nepali entrepreneurs are likely to lose billions of rupees after the China government blocked the border checkpoints to Nepal, citing the coronavirus pandemic.

Tatopani border point resumed by the second week of June, again remained shut due to the landslide since July 9.

The Chinese government has decided not to open the border, saying that Tso Lake on the China side is likely to burst.

Likewise, Rasuwagadhi checkpoint has been closed since the last week of December 2019.
