Death toll of Nepalis abroad due to COVID-19 hits 243

KATHMANDU: It has been confirmed that 43 more Nepalis in foreign lands have succumbed to the coronavirus pandemic.

Citing the Nepali embassy in Saudi Arabia, the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) health committee stated that more 41 Nepalis died due to coronavirus in Saudi Arabia since last March.

With the addition of the backlog deaths, 52 Nepalis have died of the coronavirus in Saudi Arabia.

Similarly, two more Nepalis have died of the coronavirus infection in Qatar in the past week.

A total of 243 Nepalis in 16 foreign countries have succumbed to the pandemic till Saturday evening, according to Coordinator of NRNA Health Committee Sanjeev Sapkota.

Nepalis living in 16 countries, including UK, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Ireland, Japan, Turkey, the Netherlands, Sweden, India, and South Africa, have lost their lives to the pandemic.

According to the health committee, coronavirus cases have risen slightly this week in countries, including Spain, Poland, India, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.

Nepalis in 40 countries around the globe have been infected with the coronavirus so far.

So far, 61,710 Nepalis from 30 countries have been rescued through the joint initiative of the NRNA and embassies, according to NRNA.

Meanwhile, according to the Nepali Embassy in Saudi Arabia, the bodies of 60 Nepalis who died due to various reasons, including the coronavirus in Saudi Arabia are yet to be brought to Nepal.

So far, the bodies of 300 Nepalis who died abroad due to various reasons have been brought to Nepal.
