KATHMANDU: Five more Nepalis succumbed to the coronavirus pandemic in foreign countries in the past week.
According to the Health Committee under the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), all the deaths were reported in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
NRNA Health Committee Coordinator Dr. Sanjeev Sapkota said that 200 Nepalis in 16 countries have died of coronavirus infection till Saturday evening.
Nepalis living in South Korea have tested positive for coronavirus for the first time.
According to the Division of Infectious Disease Surveillance, South Korea, coronavirus has been confirmed on 18 Nepalis working at a food company, Hanul Nongsan, in South Korea.
A 20-year-old Nepali girl working in the food company underwent a coronavirus test after suffering from some health complications and she tested positive.
Similarly, 17 other Nepalis underwent the test after the girl tested positive for COVID-19. Coronavirus was confirmed on them as well.
All 18 coronavirus infected people are receiving treatment and the other 16 people living and working with them have been kept in isolation.
So far, the infection has been seen in 34,939 Nepalis living in four countries. Of them, 32,989 have recovered, according to the health committee.
56,777 Nepalis rescued so far
A total of 56,777 Nepalis stranded abroad have been rescued so far.
They were rescued in collaboration with the Non-Resident Nepali Association, Government of Nepal, diplomatic missions abroad and embassies, said Chiran Sharma, press coordinator of the COVID-19 High-Level Committee under NRNA.
