KATHMANDU: There has been a shortage of blood throughout the country due to the prohibitory orders imposed in various places of Nepal including Kathmandu Valley.
The Nepal Red Cross Society that manages blood stated it could not meet the demand for blood for the time being.
According to the Red Cross Society, the blood donation program could not be carried out due to the orders.
According to Shravan Shrestha, technical officer of the Central Blood Transfusion Service, all the camps booked for Saturday have been postponed.
According to him, 64 pints of blood could be donated as 32 donors came to the center on Thursday but 61 more had to return empty-handed, according to a statement issued by the Red Cross Society.
Pawan Gupta, Director of the Central Blood Transfusion Service, said that there was a shortage of blood even for patients with accidents, bleeding, obstetrics, heart, cancer and kidney disease, thalassemia, hemophilia and emergency surgery.
Apart from the center in Kathmandu, there is a shortage of blood in Dharan, Biratnagar, Chitwan and other places, said Divya Raj Poudel, communications director of the Nepal Red Cross Society.
The Bhaktapur Center, which has been campaigning to go to Bhaktapur if there is a shortage of blood, has collected enough blood in the past, but no camp has been organized for the past 13 days.
Due to the demand for blood, blood donors, organizations and Red Cross bodies, even in small groups, could organize blood donation programs with the help of local municipalities and administrations, said Poudel. “Regular blood donors and young people can go to nearby centers to donate blood,” he said.
