KATHMANDU: A three-justice bench hearing the case on a review petition filed by the Office of the Attorney General against the Supreme Court’s decision to reduce jail term of former Deputy Inspector General of the Armed Police Force Ranjan Koirala has decided to reopen the case for a review.
After hearing to the attorney’s logics on the need to review the SC’s verdict on the murder case, the bench consisting of Justices Bam Kumar Shrestha, Prakash Kumar Dhungana and Kumar Regmi permitted the review.
Koirala was convicted of murdering his wife eight and a half years ago.
Kathmandu District Court and Lalitpur High Court had sentenced life imprisonment on Koirala along with the confiscation of his property for killing his wife Gita Dhakal.
However, the apex court upset the verdicts of the Kathmandu District Court and Lalitpur Appellate Court, waiving 11 years of his prison term.
A joint bench of Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher JBR and justice Tej Bahadur KC had reduced the jail term of Koirala.
Following the verdict, Koirala was released on Thursday.
The Office of the Attorney General had filed the review petition against the court’s decision.
