All 36 sluices opened at Gandak barrage after water level increases

NAWALPARASI: All the sluices have been opened at the Gandak barrage of the Narayani River after the water level rose to the danger mark.

As many as 36 sluices of the barrage have been opened after the water level in the river rose to the danger level, said Tara Singh, Information Officer at the Gandak barrage.

Water level is considered dangerous when it reaches 300,000 cusec of water.  The water level was measured up to 270,000 cusec on Monday evening, informed Singh.

Even though the barrage had the capacity to hold 700,000 cusec of water flow during the construction period, it can now hold only 400,000 to 500,000 cusec of water flow.

Meanwhile locals have been cautioned after the water level in the river has risen to the danger level, said Chief District Office Sagarmani Pathak.

Security personnel have been kept on high alert in case of emergency in the area, said Pathak.
