Experts warn more locusts will enter Nepal

KATHMANDU: With the change of the direction of the wind, more swarms of locusts are heading towards Nepal, experts have warned.

According to the Plant Quarantine and Pesticides Center (PQPC) established under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, with the change of the direction of wind, more swarms of locusts are heading towards Nepal from India.

PQPC informed that there are large swarms of locusts in Bhagalpur and Motihari area in India whereas one of the swarms has fled towards Champaran from Kushinagar. The insects are projected to reach Darjeeling and Siliguri flying past Nepal.

According to meteorologists, the monsoon induced by the west/south-west monsoon wind is flowing from Arabian sea. Moreover, there is east/south-east wind influencing the weather here.

The Department of Meteorology has estimated that the effect shall remain for three more days.

Thus, the wind heading towards west from east is likely to push the flow of locusts towards the terai, and lower parts of hilly region.

The center has requested the farmers of terai and lower hilly regions to remain alert against the plaguing pests.

According to PQPC, nearly 4 million locusts are spread in more than 50 districts of Nepal by now.
