NCP lawmaker Shrestha stresses nat’l unity to retain disputed land

KATHMANDU: Nepal Communist Party lawmaker Narayan Kaji Shrestha has stressed national unity to retain the encroached land of Nepal.

Deliberating on the Constitution Amendment Bill to implement the revised map of Nepal in the Coat of Arms in the National Assembly today, Shrestha said the Sugauli Treaty held in 1816 has clearly defined that the land to the east of Kalinadi belongs to Nepal.

He further said that Kalinadi is today’s Mahakali River and added that no additional treaties have been signed between Nepal and India regarding the border issue since.

Expressing his views in the parliament meeting, Shrestha maintained that all the Indian security personnel should be withdrawn including the army camps from disputed land.

“Nepali people want to get the border issue settled through dialogues and talks at the diplomatic level based on historical facts and evidences,” said Shrestha.

Meanwhile, he urged the Indian government to come to the talks table and settle the border dispute at the earliest without aggravating the age-old friendly ties between the two countries.

Lawmakers of the National Assembly are deliberating on the constitution amendment bill to endorse it to implement the new map of Nepal incorporating Kalapani, Limpiyadhura, and Lipu Lekh today.

The House of Representatives (HoR) has unanimously endorsed the Constitution amendment bill to change the coat of arms.

The amendment bill was tabled in the NA on Sunday.
