WASHINGTON: Thousands of people demonstrated, mainly peacefully, across the US following the death of George Floyd, an African-American, in police custody.

Termed as one of the biggest protests in the US, and joined by Floyd’s relatives, the demonstrations took place in Houston, Texas.

People defied curfews in some cities, imposed after violence and looting in some cities.

The Floyd death has reignited anger over police killings of black Americans as well as racism, international media reports have said.

Demonstrators took to the streets – not only to express outrage at the treatment of Floyd – but also to condemn police brutality against black Americans, reports said.

Protestors have called for an end to immunity of police. They have also called for an end to racism and discrimination.

In Washington DC, police fired tear gas. Helicopters hovered above protesters marching towards the White House.

Likewise, traffic was blocked in New York’s Manhattan as demonstrators ignored a night-time curfew.
