Govt tables constitution amendment bill at Parliament

KATHMANDU: The government has tabled the constitution amendment bill at the meeting of the House of Representatives on Sunday.

Minister for Law Shivamaya Tumbahamphe tabled the bill to amend Schedule 3 related to Article 9 (2) of the Constitution for including an updated map that includes Limpiyadhura, Lipu Lekh and Kalapani.

As per the Parliament’s regulations, three days should be given for further amendments to the constitution amendment proposal submitted by the Law Minister.

After three days, the amendment bill will be discussed and it will become part of the constitution following endorsement by a two-thirds majority.

The three-day rule can also be suspended if political parties agree for a suspension.

Earlier, it was said that the proposed amendment to the constitution would be tabled on Wednesday, but was removed from the business at the last minute as the main opposition party Nepali Congress (NC) was undecided.

A Central Working Committee of the party on late Saturday night had decided to vote in favor of amending the constitution.

With the main opposition party supporting the bill, it will get two-third majority held mandatory for such amendment.

The government had registered a bill for the amendment of the constitution at the Federal Parliament’s Secretariat last Friday.

The amendment in the constitution will make room for the change in the map used in the national emblem.
