KATHMANDU: The government is preparing to ensure the participation of representatives from various political parties in Nepal’s delegation to the 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
At the initiative of Prime Minister Balendra Shah, preparations are underway to involve representatives of both ruling and opposition parties in the House of Representatives to develop a common national position on climate change, according to the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers.
The initiative aims to strengthen Nepal’s representation and make its voice more effective on the international stage.
On Friday, chief whips and representatives of various political parties held discussions at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers on Nepal’s participation in COP31.
The meeting, attended by Agriculture, Forest and Environment Minister Geeta Chaudhary and the Prime Minister’s political adviser, Asim Shah, discussed Nepal’s participation in the conference, priority issues to be raised and ways to effectively present matters of national interest.
COP31 is scheduled to take place in Türkiye from November 9 to 20.
As Nepal is highly vulnerable to climate change, the country needs to raise key concerns, including the protection of the Himalayan region, climate-induced disasters, climate justice, energy and climate finance, before the international community.
