KATHMANDU: Rescue teams have recovered four bodies from the site of the avalanche that struck Pakistan’s 8,047-meter Broad Peak on Thursday, while renowned mountaineer Nirmal Purja remains among the climbers still missing.
According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan, the bodies were found by ground rescue teams, but their identities have not yet been confirmed.
The missing climbers include Nepali mountaineer Nirmal (Nims) Purja, along with Nepali climbers Pur Bahadur Gurung, Kili Pemba Sherpa, Nima Sherpa, Gyalu Sherpa, and Nawang Thindu Sherpa.
Also missing are Pakistani climber Sohail Sakhi, Chinese climber Wang Zhong, American climber Mallory Geis, and Omani climber Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy, according to a statement posted by the Alpine Club of Pakistan on its official Instagram account.
The club said it received “deeply concerning reports” after the avalanche hit the climbing team around midday Thursday on Broad Peak in the Karakoram range.
The Alpine Club said it is coordinating with government authorities and other relevant agencies to support the ongoing search and rescue operation.
According to the statement, efforts are underway to mobilize helicopter support and all available rescue resources as quickly as weather and operational conditions allow.
The club said it is continuing to closely monitor the situation and maintain coordination with all organizations involved in the rescue mission.
