BHADRAPUR: Chhurpi (hard cheese) worth Rs 1.79 billion was exported through the Mechi Customs Office, the country’s major eastern trade point, during the last fiscal year.
With international demand for Nepali chhurpi continuing to grow, exports increased by around 27 percent compared to the previous fiscal year. According to the Mechi Customs Office, chhurpi worth Rs 1.417 billion was exported in fiscal year 2081/82.
Mankal Rai, information officer at the office, said chhurpi exports have been rising steadily over the past five years. Nepali chhurpi is widely used as pet food, particularly for dogs and cats, in international markets. It is produced mainly in the eastern hill districts of Ilam, Panchthar, and Taplejung.
