KATHMANDU: A total of 193 people lost their lives in disaster-related incidents across Nepal between April 14 and July 30, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA).
The authority said 3,951 incidents of natural and environmental disasters were recorded during the three-and-a-half-month period. The incidents also left three people missing and 1,165 injured, while directly affecting 5,087 families nationwide.
Structural fires accounted for the largest share of incidents, with 1,002 cases reported. Snakebites were the second most common at 670 cases, followed by 662 landslides, 479 windstorms, 231 lightning incidents, 226 heavy rainfall events, 218 wildlife attacks, 198 floods, and 191 forest fires.
In the latest 24-hour reporting period, from the morning of July 29 to the morning of July 30, the NDRRMA recorded 34 disaster incidents across the country. Thirteen people were injured, 23 were rescued safely, and the estimated property damage exceeded Rs 4.1 million.
The incidents reported during the day included nine heavy rainfall events, eight snakebite cases, eight fires, five landslides, three wildlife attacks, and one flood.
The authority also reported widespread rainfall activity across Nepal, with 266 of the country’s 448 monitoring stations recording precipitation during the 24-hour period.
The highest rainfall was recorded at Dodhara in Kanchanpur district, where 104.6 millimeters of rain fell in a single day.
