Oli warns of challenges to Constitution, democratic republic in UML directive

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli has claimed that Nepal’s Constitution, democratic republic, and parliamentary democracy are facing serious challenges.

In a message included in the party’s recently released inter-party directive, Oli stated that the Constitution of Nepal, achieved through long years of struggle and sacrifice, has come under threat and that the future of the democratic republic is also at risk.

He alleged that efforts are being made to sideline political parties and leaders that played key roles in Nepal’s democratic movements under the banner of promoting either “new” or “old” political forces.

Oli further claimed that vested interests seeking to misuse Nepal’s territory amid growing geopolitical rivalries have become increasingly active. He said certain actions of the government have created a situation in which questions are being raised about the country’s geographical integrity.

According to Oli, the responsibility of safeguarding not only the party’s political movement but also the Constitution and Nepal’s democratic future has now fallen on UML.

He stressed that UML must remain strong and united to protect Nepal’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and to prevent regional instability arising from ongoing shifts in the global order.

The directive describes the results of the Falgun 21 elections as “unusual” and notes that the party remains concerned about the outcome.

It states that not only UML but also other major democratic parties emerged weakened from the elections, adding that the reasons behind the results and questions of responsibility would be reviewed in due course.

Oli also emphasized the need to address post-election frustration and prevent what he described as a growing tendency of members leaving the party.

He said UML is currently engaged in a review process and that a roadmap for restructuring and revitalizing the organization will be advanced through an upcoming Central Committee meeting.

Highlighting the party’s membership renewal campaign, Oli said UML aims to strengthen its organizational base and asserted that solutions are possible regardless of how serious the challenges may be.

Recalling UML’s history of overcoming numerous political challenges and emerging as a central force in national politics, Oli called on party members and leaders at all levels to actively engage in the party’s renewal and strengthening efforts.
