Squatters’ association announces phased protest for land rights

KATHMANDU: The All Nepal Squatters Association has announced a phased protest program demanding the protection of rights of landless Dalits, squatters, and unmanaged settlers.

In an appeal issued by Chair Amar Pariyar, the association has called for participation in peaceful protests and urged political parties, organizations, and civil groups to extend support and solidarity.

Under the first phase, the association said it will engage party leadership and leaders at various levels until May 3, informing them about the protest program and seeking implementation support.

It also plans to pressure elected representatives through phone calls, mobile communication, and social media to commit to resolving landless issues.

In the second phase, from May 3 to 13, meetings and gatherings will be organized nationwide to form struggle committees. The association will also submit memorandums to government offices and launch campaigns against forced evictions.

Protest letters will also be registered at district offices of the ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party during this period.

The association has warned of stronger protests, including a press conference in Kathmandu on May 14 demanding the removal of Prime Minister Balen Shah through a right to recall mechanism, followed by a nationwide highway blockade along the Mechi-Mahakali corridor the same day.

Similarly, a nationwide signature campaign will be launched from May 15 to 21, urging the recall of elected representatives. The association has also announced an indefinite nationwide strike from May 21 if its demands are not addressed.

The group has been demanding an end to forced evictions, distribution of land ownership certificates to the landless, and protection of constitutional and human rights.
