KATHMANDU: Major opposition parties represented in Parliament have formed a united front against recent decisions taken by the government led by PM Balen Shah.
A meeting of opposition leaders held on Thursday under the chairmanship of Prem Prasad Dangol expressed serious concern over the government’s actions, stating that several decisions have created fear and uncertainty among citizens.
Participants, including Nepali Congress Chief Whip Basana Thapa and NCP Chief Whip Yubaraj Dulal, concluded that recent moves by the government have negatively impacted public confidence.
The opposition strongly objected to the eviction of squatter settlements in various parts of the country, including the Kathmandu Valley, without proper identification of landless people and adequate alternative arrangements. They accused the government of undermining the constitutional right to housing and putting vulnerable groups such as children, new mothers, and the elderly at risk.
The meeting also criticized the government for failing to control black market practices and ensure an effective public distribution system amid rising prices of essential goods.
Citing possible shortages of chemical fertilizers due to global and regional tensions, opposition leaders urged the government to ensure timely supply to avoid further strain on farmers.
They further demanded immediate relief measures, stating that repeated hikes in petroleum prices have increased transportation and agricultural production costs, contributing to inflation.
The opposition also called for compensation to farmers affected by bird flu outbreaks reported from Jhapa to Kathmandu.
Additionally, the alliance termed the government’s plan to restrict or dissolve student unions, trade unions, and civil servant organizations as “undemocratic,” warning of protests if such decisions are not withdrawn.
The parties also accused the government of excluding them from the policy and budget-making process for the upcoming fiscal year and demanded a more transparent and inclusive approach.
