KATHMANDU: Nepal has been eliminated from the ongoing 2nd Asian Games after its men’s cricket quarter-final against Sri Lanka was abandoned due to rain.
The match, scheduled to be played today at Korogi Sports Park in Nagoya, could not begin because of continuous rainfall. According to the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), the match was called off without a toss being conducted.
As a result, Nepal’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals have ended once again.
Under the tournament regulations, if a match cannot be played, the team ranked higher in the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Twenty20 rankings is declared the winner and advances to the next round. Under this provision, Sri Lanka advanced to the semi-finals, while Nepal was eliminated. Sri Lanka is currently ranked ninth in the T20I rankings, while Nepal is ranked 14th.
Nagoya has experienced continuous rainfall since Saturday, with the weather also affecting Nepal’s group-stage match against Japan.
Nepal defeated Afghanistan by five wickets in its opening group-stage match. It then advanced from the group after sharing points with Japan in the final group-stage match.
