KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress Central Disciplinary Committee has taken contrasting decisions against two leaders named Purna Bahadur, dropping action against one while suspending the other.
A meeting of the committee led by coordinator Taraman Gurung decided not to proceed with disciplinary action against former acting president Purna Bahadur Khadka.
The committee concluded that the issue had lost relevance following a recent verdict by the Supreme Court of Nepal, which settled the party’s internal legitimacy dispute after the special general convention.
Khadka had earlier been asked to furnish clarification for issuing a press statement using party letterhead while citing a position not formally recognised by the party.
However, the committee decided to shelve the case in light of the court’s ruling.
In contrast, the party has suspended Purna Bahadur Tamang, also known as Kanchharam, who serves as the party’s district president in Ramechhap.
The committee said Tamang was suspended for violating party discipline, noting that his initial clarification was unsatisfactory and further investigation was required. The suspension aims to prevent any influence on the inquiry process.
Tamang had been asked to clarify within three days over a controversial public statement involving party president Gagan Thapa, in which he made claims about financial spending during elections.
According to the committee, Tamang’s remarks were misleading, baseless and inconsistent with the dignity of his position, amounting to a violation of the party’s statute.
Based on these findings, the party decided to suspend him with immediate effect pending further investigation.
