Govt will take responsibility for the homeless: RSP Chair Lamichhane

KATHMANDU: Rabi Lamichhane, Chair of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), has said that the government will take responsibility for the proper management of homeless citizens.

Speaking at an informal meeting of the RSP parliamentary party at Singha Durbar on Wednesday, Lamichhane stated that no one would be rendered homeless during efforts to manage settlements in high-risk areas.

According to party spokesperson Manish Jha, Lamichhane said that informal settlers living in vulnerable zones have been repeatedly informed and gradually relocated to safer places.

“The government is concerned about citizens forced to live near drains and flood-prone areas and has a duty to ensure safe housing for all,” Jha quoted Lamichhane as saying.

Lamichhane further said that issues related to unplanned settlements across the country would be addressed promptly through the formation of a special commission.

“The government will not allow any landless or informal settlers to become homeless. Suggestions for coordination are welcome, but unnecessary politicization must be avoided,” he said, adding that exploiting vulnerable communities as a “vote bank” by forcing them to remain in flood- and sewage-risk areas is wrong.
