Nepal Army clarifies data collection on squatters

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Army has clarified that its recent data collection on squatters is aimed at strengthening disaster response, not targeting vulnerable communities.

In a statement, the Army said the activity is part of efforts to enhance rescue operations, relief distribution, and rehabilitation during emergencies. It explained that the data is being used for hazard mapping and updating records to better assess potential disaster risks.

The clarification follows reports circulating on social media and in sections of the media suggesting that the Army had sought details of squatters, raising public concern.

Meanwhile, the Army said it has intensified preparations for disaster risk reduction as the monsoon season approaches. Citing past disaster incidents, it noted that plans are being implemented to minimize damage from floods, landslides, inundation, and river erosion.

The Army added that coordination and collaboration with relevant agencies are ongoing to ensure effective response during emergencies.

It further stated that local units have been directed to carry out preliminary risk assessments in their respective areas and remain on standby for the mobilization of necessary forces if required.
