KATHMANDU: In preparation for the demonstrations by the CPN-UML, the Nepal Police have placed personnel nationwide on standby duty from 8 am today, with patrols by the Armed Police Force also scheduled to begin.
The UML has been protesting since Saturday morning against the arrest of its chairman and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Nepali Congress leader and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak.
Both leaders were taken into custody in Bhaktapur on Saturday morning to implement the report of the Gen-Z Movement Inquiry Commission.
According to the party’s schedule, the UML plans to submit memorandums to district administration offices across the country today, Sunday. In this context, the Central Police directed units last night to ensure the security of restricted areas, important buildings, and the safety of the public.
Central Police spokesperson DIG Abinarayan Kafle said that while security management is a routine police responsibility, personnel will be mobilized according to the seriousness of the situation and the orders of their respective commanders.
Police officers across the country have been instructed not to take leave except for essential reasons, and all battalions, squads, and training centers have been activated.
In Kathmandu, additional police teams have been deployed to monitor restricted zones and key locations from 8 am, with arrangements in place for crowd management and control, police sources said.
