Police open fire, 10 arrested in crackdown on robbery gang in Mulpani, Kathmandu

KATHMANDU: Police fired shots while attempting to apprehend a gang involved in robberies in the Mulpani area of Kathmandu on Wednesday night, leaving one person injured. Ten individuals were arrested during the operation, according to SSP Ramesh Thapa of Kathmandu District Police Office.

Police said that the group was intercepted while preparing to commit a robbery, and shots were fired when they allegedly tried to attack officers. Vinay Tamang was injured in the incident and is currently undergoing treatment.

Authorities reported that, over the past three months, an organized gang had been operating in Kathmandu at night, typically riding 2–3 motorcycles with three individuals per bike, targeting gold jewelry, cash, and mobile phones.

The gang reportedly assaulted victims during the robberies, in some cases cutting their ears while stealing gold. Police have released photographs of victims whose ears were cut during these attacks.

A joint team from Kathmandu District Police Office, Swayambhu, Gaushala, and Boudha police stations arrested the suspects from various locations across the city.

Vinay Tamang is believed to be the main planner of the gang’s robbery operations. Other arrested individuals played roles such as motorcycle riders, scouts, and buyers of stolen jewelry. Most of those arrested reportedly have prior criminal records related to theft and robbery.

Police have also seized multiple motorcycles used in the crimes. The gang reportedly committed robberies in areas including Boudha, Gaushala, Swayambhu, Lainchaur, Budhanilkantha, Kapan, and Koteshwor during nighttime assaults, stealing gold, silver, cash, and mobile phones.

So far, 27 victims have come forward to police, and four formal complaints have been registered against the gang. Police stated that further investigation is ongoing.
