Rain expected across various parts of Nepal from tomorrow

KATHMANDU: Rainfall is expected in various parts of Nepal from Thursday as the effects of a powerful cyclone named ‘Arnab’, which originated in the Bay of Bengal and struck the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, begin to influence weather conditions across the country.

According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the cyclone could bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to several provinces, along with snowfall in mountainous regions.

Meteorologist Binu Maharjan of the Department said the effects of the cyclone were already being felt in Nepal, with partial cloud cover reported in Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces. Light rain was also recorded at one or two places in Lumbini Province on Wednesday morning.

“The impact of the cyclone is already being observed in Nepal,” she said.

The weather system is expected to bring cloudy conditions, rainfall and snowfall across the country until Saturday.

Moderate rainfall is likely at many places in the mountainous regions of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces. Similarly, moderate rainfall is forecast at several locations in the hilly and Tarai regions of Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces.

Maharjan said heavy rainfall is possible at a few places, while one or two locations in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces could experience extremely heavy rainfall.

Some areas of Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces may also experience thunderstorms, lightning and hail.

In view of the forecast, the Department has urged the public to take necessary precautions, warning that the anticipated weather conditions could affect agricultural activities, mountaineering, trekking and tourism.

Farmers engaged in paddy harvesting have been advised to plan their activities in accordance with weather forecasts. Tourists travelling in high-hill and mountainous regions have also been urged to remain in safe locations until weather conditions improve.
