KATHMANDU: The government has initiated the process of amending the Nepal Law Commission Act, 2006, to assign the Nepal Law Commission full responsibility for drafting all government bills.
The Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs has issued a public notice inviting suggestions on the proposed amendment within seven days. Members of the public can submit their feedback through the ministry’s online portal at lawfeedback.moljpa.gov.np.
According to Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sobita Gautam, the amendment aims to end the practice of hiring external consultants or institutions to prepare draft legislation.
She said all government bills will, in the future, be drafted by the Nepal Law Commission.
Meanwhile, the ministry has declared the current fiscal year 2026/27 as the “Year of Legal Reform and Lawmaking.” As part of the initiative, it has already submitted to the Federal Parliament a list of 166 bills planned for drafting during the fiscal year.
The ministry said the draft amendment will be revised based on public feedback before being sent to the Ministry of Finance for concurrence. It will then be tabled at the Cabinet for approval before being registered in Parliament.
