India to support construction of 14 earthquake-resistant schools in Nepal

KATHMANDU: The Government of India has agreed to provide grant assistance for the construction of 14 schools across various districts of Nepal under its post-earthquake reconstruction support program.

A memorandum of agreement was signed between contracting companies and the Central Project Implementation Unit (Education) under the Ministry of Education and Sports, according to the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu.

The project, valued at Rs 560.2 million, will support school construction in Gorkha, Nuwakot, Dhading, Dolakha, Kathmandu, Kavrepalanchok, Ramechhap, and Sindhupalchok districts.

The agreement signing ceremony was attended by officials from the Development Partnership and Reconstruction Division of the Indian Embassy, project directors from the implementing unit, concerned government officials, and representatives of contracting companies.

According to the project details, the schools will be built in line with Nepal’s earthquake-resistant reconstruction standards. The infrastructure will include academic buildings, furnished classrooms, and separate sanitation facilities for boys and girls.

Under its post-earthquake reconstruction assistance program, India has already completed and handed over 70 schools in eight districts and the Central Library of Tribhuvan University in January 2024.

The Indian side has reaffirmed its commitment to continue cooperation with the Government of Nepal in post-earthquake reconstruction as well as broader social and economic development initiatives.
