Gen-Z Movement tells President to reject ordinances, cites threat to democratic process

KATHMANDU: The Gen-Z Movement Nepal has urged President Ram Chandra Paudel to reject the recently proposed ordinances, arguing that they undermine democratic norms.

In a letter addressed to Sheetal Niwas on Tuesday, the movement’s spokesperson, Bijay Shah, called for respect of the public mandate received through the recent House of Representatives election.

The letter argues that attempts to govern through ordinances go against democratic processes, particularly when Parliament is active.

“An ordinance is an emergency measure, not an alternative to regular governance,” the statement reads, adding that bypassing the legislature while it remains functional contradicts the principle of separation of powers.

The movement also expressed serious concern over the possible use of the Constitutional Council to influence the judiciary.

It has therefore demanded that the President reject the ordinances and send them back for reconsideration.

According to the movement, rejecting the ordinances would help maintain institutional balance and strengthen public trust in democratic governance.
